7 Aug 2009: Setup at Clearwell Caves - Ancient Iron Mines for The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone

7 Aug 2009: Mark Newton: I arrived just after 4 PM, and the crew were already in the process of sett ing up for that evening.s shoot. Fortunately the caves were still admitting visi tors so I took the opportunity to look around inside.

The BBC have constructed some pillars inside the caves as well as a large arch. In addition, the crew were also positioning some statues around the lake inside the caves complex. They were also building a large wooded stage elsewhere in the caves, I.ve no idea what it is for but it w as a large square flat surface. Also draped across the arch and one of the pillars was a type of vine. This was also placed around many other parts of the caves. I don.t know if this is merely set dressing or something more sinister?

There were a number of pieces of equipment being set up, much of it wrapped in p lastic to protect it from the water which continually drips from the cave roof i n many places. Having seen everything I was going to in the caves I then returne d above ground to see what was happening outside.

Matt, Karen and Alex Kingston arrived a little after 5 O.Clock, followed a few m oments later by a group of actors/extras dressed in the same military uniforms s een at Southerndown Beach. They went into the caves for a short while before com ing out and returning to the base at Puzzelwood. Just before they left Matt was kind enough to sign autographs for some of the children waiting. They returned a t about 6:30 and hurried straight into the caves. One of the drivers then told u s that they would then stay in the caves until midnight/ One O.Clock (with food being brought down to them) so that seemed to be a good time to depart and trust my luck to the M4 and M25.
