Welcome!

"I once spent decades faithfully cataloguing all the locations, every visit from the smallest camera angle to the largest zoom. But no sooner had I finished when it all started changing - new series, new filming, locations running amuck ... I had to start amending my entries - oh the task is endless!"

Welcome to Locations Guide, a website devoted to the filming of the classic and new television series Doctor Who, and spin-offs such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

(The Myth Makers)
1978BBC Television Centre
(studio: The Androids of Tara)
2005Duffryn High School
(School Reunion)
2006Lord Leycester Hospital
(The Shakespeare Code)
2007Lafarge Cement (Aberthaw)
(Planet of the Ood)

This site is designed to be a guide to the many locations around the UK and the world which have been used during the making of the series, providing details on how they were used within the shows, where to find them, and a comparison between how they look in the modern day to their original appearance on screen.

Our aim is to maintain an up-to-date database of locations and how they change over time, which means that unlike printed publications we can reflect alterations, demolition or name changes as they occur. However, being that there are some 944 locations in the database, this might be a never-ending task!

This means we depend on you! We hope to provide a community for location-seekers in order for them to organise trips to places themselves, and to provide feedback on what they find. Please send us any news, updates, and photo submissions for locations; we're also interested in filming reports, and also photos portraying places at the time of filming or or in subsequent years before they were altered/demolished.

As of 24th August there are 2433 photos submitted, covering 690 out of the 944 known locations listed on site.
A selection of those photos are below (full list) - why not submit your own! (here is a list of locations we don't have photos for at present)

filming details27th August 2008 - Return to old haunts

Filming for Torchwood has returned to one of both its and Doctor Who's old haunts, the Cardiff Royal Infirmary. The interior has been used for hospital wards and like many times (most recently seen as outside the Royal Hope in Turn Left). As filming is inside, however, reports seem unlikely this time around.

events27th August 2008 - Swansea Open House

This is South Wales has reported on the upcoming Open House weekend in Swansea on 13th-14th September, and mentions a Doctor Who tour that will will form a part of it. Says the article: "TIME-TRAVELLING saviour of mankind Doctor Who and the South Wales Evening Post may not appear to have much in common at first glance. But they will both be featuring in this year's Swansea Open House event, which gives people the chance of a behind-the-scenes glimpse at buildings not usually accessible to the public. Fans of Doctor Who will be able to take a tour of locations used in filming the TV series as part of the through-the-keyhole event, which takes place on the weekend of September 13 and 14."

There is also a more detailed PDF available for the weekend, which elaborates that the tour will run half-hourly from 10:30-3:30pm, commencing at the Guildhall.

filming details20th August 2008 - Filming at the Coal Exchange

Filming is continuing down at Cardiff Bay today, though this time it is all indoors at the The Coal Exchange, previously seen in Combat and Voyage of the Damned. Says I.C.: "there were quite a few (what look like) supporting artists going into the building at around 9:55am, dressed in smart clothes (suits basically). Now The Coal Exchange is currently closed. There is no business going on there, so putting two and two together I would guess that those people in the suits are involved with the filming!"

Filming is expected to remain inside the location for the rest of the week.

filming details19th August 2008 - Filming Begins!

Filming has formally begun (well first publicly seen!) this morning for Torchwood down in Cardiff Bay, utilising an old haunt of Mount Stuart Square, previously seen in last season's opener Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. A brief report and clips are available from Scott Frankton, I.C., and The Brigade Leader.

Urgh! Well it had to happen, Cardiff Buses have changed the urls pointing to their bus maps. We are in the process of updating location links to reflect to new (much better looking!) maps, so apologies if any map link isn't working when you try it (if this is still the case by the end of the weekend please let us know!).

filming details15th August 2008 - Torchwood filming from next week

Torchwood Magazine reports that principal photography (filming to us) for the new series of Torchwood is due to start next week, from Monday 18th August. Time to get your SUV-detectors on maximum!

publications13th August 2008 - Double Locations Whammy!

This month sees not one but two locations guides released!

The latest edition of Torchwood Magazine features an article on locations used in the show so far, broken down into Cardiff and South Wales areas for each of the two series. As one might expect from a wider interest magazine it doesn't go into greater detail such as filming dates and so forth like our own episode listings do (streets ahoy!).

Panini's latest guide the Series Four Companion, however, provides the same level of intricate production details that we've come to expect from these specialist volumes, with some 148 pages delving into each story from the last year (including the Children in Need special "Time Crash"), covering pre-production through to broadcast publicity. For us locationers there is of course plenty of detail on where the show was made!

filming details28th July 2008 - Filming in Llantwit Major

Filming is currently taking place in Llantwit Major for the second season of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and is expected to continue until tomorrow (Tuesday).
