Greenwich Gas Works
Tunnel Avenue, North Greenwich

The South Metropolitan Gas Company opened the East Greenwich gasworks in 1887 to provide gas for South London. Gas was produced from coal, so once natural reserves were discovered in the North Sea it became redundant, eventually ceasing production in 1976. The site was derelict until the late 1990s, when the land was redeveloped for the Millennium Dome and new housing.
