Heathrow Airport
Hounslow, Middlesex

Heathrow became a passenger airport in 1946, utilising old runways from its private use; the Queen ceremonially laid the first slab for the new runways in 1953. Terminals 2, 3, 1 and 4 were opened in 1955, 1956, 1968 and 1986 respectively.

These days is it considered to be one of the world's busiest airports, with Terminal 5 due to open in 2008, and a new passenger terminal, Terminal East to replace the older Terminals 1 and 2 by 2020.

Concorde was retired from service in 2003 due to the costs of running the planes becoming financially unviable; the last flight arrived in Heathrow on 24th October.
