Norris Castle
New Barn Road, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO32 6AZ

Norris Castle was built in the Norman style by James Wyatt in 1790. It was built to look like a castle, but this was only for show as there are no actual fortifications. Queen Victoria stayed at the castle when she was young, and this led her to purchase nearby Osbourne House.

The owners at the time of filming, the Coventrys, still live at the castle. It is a private residence, but used to be open to the public during the 60s and 70s. Photos reproduced on the site are by permission.

How to get here from Red Cliff:

»

Road: Head towards Sandown on Culver Parade, and then turn right into The Avenue (B3329). Follow this and then turn left onto the Broadway (A3055), and then continue on through town until you reach Newport Road (A3056) - turn right into it and then follow it through to Newport. Once there, head towards Whippingham (A3054), and once there turn left towards East Cowes (A3021). When you reach East Cowes, on York Avenue, turn right into New Barn Road, and the castle is at the end of the road. Note: the castle is private so you can only get to the gates! Parking: roadside. "This photo was actually taken from the ferry coming into East Cowes, which is about the only place you can see the castle from, as onland it is concealed behind trees on private ground!"
