Penwyllt was a small community of workers from the limestone quarries in the area of Craig-Y-Nos. It's hey-day was during the late 19th Century when it had a rail link (Neath and Brecon Railway), but went into decline as industry changed and population dwindled until the quarry closed in 1977. Most of the village was demolished in the 1980s.
A row of terraces in Powell Street remain, and now forms the headquarters of the South Wales Caving Club, which also provides accomodation.

Road: Head south along the A4067, before turning left at the next junction. Follow this across the river, and then turn left at the end, following the road all the way to the quarry and the caving club. (2 miles, 5m) +

"There was a marquee set up which inhibits the view a bit! Also, depending where you stand in the field really changes the angle of the mountain behind!"
