South Bank Centre
Waterloo, London, SE1 8XZ

The South Bank Centre is built on the grounds of the 1951 Festival of Britain, of which only the Royal Festival Hall remains. In 1965 the area came under the control of the GLC, and the Hayward Gallery/Queen Elizabeth Hall/Purcell Room were built in the late 1960s replacing the Shot Tower. The elaborate interconnecting walkways were built at this time, though the ones around the Festival Hall have since been demolished.

The Festival Hall is currently being renovated; the Hayward Galllery etc. have come under proposals for alterations a number of times in recent years, but so far none have come to fruition.

How to get here from Australia House:

»

Walk: Head west along the Strand and cross Waterloo Bridge Road, then turn left and cross the bridge. The South Bank Centre is on the right as you reach the far side of the Thames. +

"The Royal Festival Hall is currently being renovated, hence the cordoned off area in the foreground. The Gallery itself hasn't changed in three years!"

Additional Notes:

»

20 Jun 2011: The upper levels of the South Bank Centre were closed off for many years, and are used to provide points for the lighting used at night to highlight the buildings. However, for the anniversary celebrations in 2011 the levels were opened up again, with a Helmand exhibition at the southern end and an eco-garden at the northern end.
