St Mary's House and Gardens

The house was built around 1470 by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. It was saved from demolition in 1946, and is now owned by author and composer Peter Thorogood, who together with curator and designer Roger Linton embarked on a programme of restoration of the house and garden in 1984. Today the house has many thousands of visitors and recently won a national heritage award for the best restoration.

Road: A27 - Follow the A27 to Shoreham, then head north on the A283 towards Upper Beeding and Steyning. When you reach the roundabout at Bramber, turn right and then head along The Street; the house will be on the right. +

At the roundabout, turn left onto the A281 and continue along it through Henfield and then Cowfold. When you reach Crabtree, turn right into Mill Lane. Parking The lane is quite narrow and there is nowhere to park up by the pond. There is a parking area outside numbers 18-23, and you can then walk down to the bridlepath (on the left).
