Brockham Lime Works
Chalkpit Lane, Betchworth, Surrey

The Brockham Limeworks were built in the 19th Century to mine the hills of the north downs. It was closed down in 1936, and became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1975. The works were serviced by a private narrow gauge railway, and an area was preserved by the Brockham Museum until the site's stock of engines (including those seen in ) were incorporated into a collection at Amberley Museum in 1982.

How to get here:

»

Rail: Betchworth - Exit the station and turn left, walking up Station Road. Turn left into The Coombe and then follow it around as it bears left. +

»

Road: M25 - Exit junction 8 and head south along the A217 towards Reigate. Turn left onto the A25 towards Dorking, and then continue along the road until you reach a roundabout at Betchworth; take the northern exit towards the station (B2032), continue until you reach Pebble Cooombe, turning left and continuing on to Box Hill (National Trust). The Downs are accessible towards the south. Note: it may also be possible to continue along the A25 past Betchworth to Chalkpit Lane on the right - however it is unclear as to whether this is a private road or not at present. +

Production Notes:

»

12 Jan 2009: JohnnearCfon: The railway sequences were filmed in Brockham Quarry at the long closed Brockham Narrow Gauge Railway Museum about 2 miles west of Betchworth. The locomotive was one of only two surviving diesels built by Ransome and Rapier of Ipswich. A friend of mine was the driver in that scene with his head wrapped in sacking so his identity would not be revealed.
