Callow Hill Sandpit
Virginia Water, Surrey

"Unfortunately, no documentation exists in the BBC archives indicating precisely which two locations were used during the production of The Savages. The only surviving paperwork remaining is a brief memo relating to the final episode of The Gunfighters, stating that the image of a savage on the TARDIS scanner was filmed on Sunday 1 May at Virginia Water. Evidence from the Egham-by-Runnymede Historical Society indicates that the only existing sandpit at Virginia Water at the time was that at Callow Hill, which had been used as a filming location in 1959 during production of Hammer's The Stranglers of Bombay." After closure, the sandpit was used as a landfill, and once full covered and left to return to a natural habitat.
