Welcome!

"I once spent decades faithfully cataloguing all the locations, every visit from the smallest camera angle to the largest zoom. But no sooner had I finished when it all started changing - new series, new filming, locations running amuck ... I had to start amending my entries - oh the task is endless!"

Welcome to the Locations Guide, a website devoted to the filming of the classic and new television series Doctor Who, and spin-offs such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

This site is designed to be a guide to the many locations around the UK and the world which have been used for the filming of the series, providing details on how they were used within the shows, where to find them, and a comparison between how they look in the modern day to their original appearance on screen.

Our aim is to maintain an up-to-date database of locations and how they change over time, which means that unlike printed publications we can reflect alterations, demolition or name changes as they occur. However, being that there are some 1127 locations in the database, this might be a never-ending task!

This means we depend on you! We hope to provide a community for location-seekers in order for them to organise trips to places themselves, and to provide feedback on what they find. Please send us any news, updates, and photo submissions for locations; we're also interested in filming reports, and also photos portraying places at the time of filming or or in subsequent years before they were altered/demolished.

Please note that this is a fan-run site, and is not directly connected to either the BBC or the production of Doctor Who!

As of 10th March there are 3593 photos submitted, covering 851 out of the 1127 known locations listed on site.
A selection of those photos are below (full list) - why not submit your own! (here is a list of locations we don't have photos for at present)

filming details8th March 2010 - Filming roundup

Into the last block of filming for the upcoming series, and last week saw the production crew out and about around South Wales. Monday/Tuesday found them at a house in a village not too far from St. Athan - one of those cases of someone literally stumbling upon them - photos thanks to "Mormor". Later in the week found them back in the suburbs of Cardiff, with shooting in and around a house on Westville Road on Thursday and at Victoria Park on Friday. Finally, an old fire station in Pontyclun, Laneley Hall was used on Saturday.

location updates17th January 2010 - BBC Media Village for Cardiff Bay

The go-ahead has now been given by the Welsh Government in order for developer Igloo Regeneration to commence work on a new business complex to be built on derelict areas of the The Port Of Cardiff. Part of the area is planned to become a new BBC Drama Village, which will encompass new studios and offices for the Corporation, most likely leading to the transfer of Doctor Who and its spin-offs there from BBC Studios when the lease on the building runs out.

The proposed site has been used for filming for Doctor Who in the past, so sadly some more locations are likely to become ghosts of the past!

broadcasting1st January 2010 - Doctor Who 2010 Series Trailer

The BBC have released a trailer for the 2010 series of Doctor Who - watch out for the various locations we've seen them film at so far this production!

filming details30th November 2009 - Back to Foreign Climes

In what's become a regular event, the Doctor Who production crew have departed from the UK to more exotic locations, this time Croatia! They are expected to be there for a fortnight, and are initially near the town of Trogir.

Some early location reports have beeen posted locally in Trogir (you'll need to translate them though!): Report One and Report Two

website updates6th November 2009 - Server Disk Issues

There have been some disk issues on the webserver this last week that has forced the site offline, apologies our 'disappearance' for a bit. Hopefully the problem has been resolved, though it is possible it might crash again. Sorry for the problems.

website updates7th October 2009 - Embedded Videos

The albums are now able to support embedded media; this means that we can now also include items like videos within the pages as well as normal photos. This is primarily so that, rather than having to create lots additional links on the locations pages for each video referenced, we can now associate them together in one album. Please note that these are merely links to external sources such as YouTube rather than kept locally so their links might break.

The album/photo display for videos is still being developed, so there may be some 'broken' pictures for them in some listings, so no need to worry if it doesn't appear, the video should still play perfectly on the page itself!

website updates6th October 2009 - Paged Albums

Due to the increasing number of photos on some album pages - especially for film reports(!) - I have now implemented a paging system. This should hopefully make pages load a little faster!

publications30th September 2009 - Sarah Jane Smith Companion

The latest special from DWM will be released tomorrow (or in subscribers' hands already!), and covers the first two series of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Following the successful format of the previous Doctor Who Series Companions, this issue provides a day-by-day breakdown of the production of each story from conception to broadcast.

For us location enthusiasts, the issue provides information on the where and the when of filming, though sadly there isn't a handy production details summary for each story this time around.

Just a quick note: we do get enquiries about why the listings on this site don't always match those in publications such as the Companion guides. As our primary purpose is to provide comparisons between filming and the modern-day look of locations we base our entries on the current names for a place and also upon visual evidence taken when visited; hence we may list additional locations to those in publications where they've been identified (for example, Plassey Street within Invasion of the Bane was used for a sequence of Sarah Jane driving her car which falls under the more generic Glebe Street shoot in documentation.)

filming details29th September 2009 - Llandaff's Cathedral Green filming

Filming has started in Llandaff this week, with the production team currently working in the Green's The White House; being an internal shoot it is unlikely that any action will be seen, though the usual to-ings and fro-ings of production staff can be caught - Alun Vega was able to capture some of today's activities, which indicate that filming has finally started on episode one.

Filming will be moving out onto the Green itself from the 5th October, and expected to continue until the 8th. The shoot has caused some consternation amongst local businesses, however, as reported by the South Wales Echo.
