Production Notes:

»

A scene planned but ultimately cut from Episode 1 featured the Doctor and Jo's journey to the Newton Institute being held up by a herd of cows. The animals were provided by Mr Hewitt, the owner of Old Church Farm, but as the film diary noted: "This sequence will be after lunch to time in with milking time!" It is not known why the scene was dropped. The filming on 6th April had been attended by a reporter from the Basingstoke Gazette, who indicated in his article that the sequence with the cows was still being planned for the following day. Certainly the later camera scripts indicate that this scene was never transferred to videotape for relaying into studio during recording, indicating that either the sequence was abandoned as the crew tried to film it or dropped due to time or quality constraints. It is unclear whether other scenes with the Doctor and Jo in Bessie were also planned in the area - however, those broadcast were actually filmed at and , much closer to the production base, which is another indicator that the cow scene was abandoned.
