Bodiam Castle: Michael J. Jackson: "It was freezing on location, which I think showed on screen! I had said in my interview - as actors do - that yes I could ride a horse, then promptly went for lessons at the horse centre in Richmond Park. It was a different experience between there and at the castle, though, with the horse I had to ride constantly wanting to do its own thing rather than what the director wanted! I just held on as best I could!" [Production Notes]

Puzzlewood: For the scenes in Flesh and Stone where Amy collapses and camp is made, the forest itself has a fence on the right-hand side. The production team originally wanted to remove the fencing, but the owners wouldn't allow it, so it was dressed to look like rocks for the actual episode! However, the team were allowed to remove a fence for the scenes where Amy and the soldiers peer into the light. [Production Notes]

5th August 2010:

Athelhampton House (North Drive): 3 Nov 1975: John Challis on filming his death scene: I had to wade across a lake and be drowned by some rampant weed on the other side. As this was shot in December you can imagine how cold this was. Also, the lake was quite deep - yup to the chest, but two-thirds of it was mud. At the end of this shot I was supposed to seun underwater out of camera range. One the first take, the weed failed to rise, on the second the camera dipped down the bank, and on the third I got stuck in the mud. The fourth time, mercifully, it worked. I was plunged into a hot bath by my concerned dresser, given a tumbler full of Dettol and then presented with a bottle of brandy by the programme for doing my own stunt! [Production Notes]

Slickstones Quarry: 15 Jun 1976: The detonation of the cliff face during episode one was an actual one conducted by the owners and filmed by the production team, with the camera locked off in a protective steel case. Visual Effects Designer Colin Mapson: The guys who blew up the rock face were fantastic, real experts. They told us within ten feet where the blast debris would reach, allowing us to set up the camera for a spectacular low shot. They were spot-on with their prediction and it looked wonderful. [Production Notes]

Slickstones Quarry: 2 Jun 1976: The production team conducted a recce of the quarry. [Production Notes]

The circle was broken up by the Romans some time during the occupation between 55BC and 410AD, but stones were also removed by people for other buildings leading up to when it became owned by King Henry VIII!
