St. Katharine's Docks were designed by engineer Thomas Telford to replace an area of slums, and opened on 25th October 1828 to provide a large quayside area to accomodate cargo and warehouse accessibility. The docks consisted of two basins (east and west), and were connnected to the Thames via a lock. However, due to the inability of large ships to dock there the docks were not as successful as hoped. The docks did not recover from major damage during the Second World War and closed in 1968, with the old warehouses demolished in favour of modern businesses. Today, the marina and surrounding apartments is a highly sought (and expensive) place to live!

Underground (District/Circle): Tower Hill - Exit the station and head south and down the steps towards the Tower of London; turn left and follow the path alongside and under the main road, then bear right and walk through to St. Katharine's Pier. +

Wapping Pier Head (The Talons of Weng-Chiang). Walk past the Dickens Inn onto St. Katharine's Way, and follow this east until it becomes Wapping High Street. Continue along here until you reach Wapping Pier Head.
