Betchworth Quarry
Pebblehill Road, Betchworth, Surrey
Betchworth Quarry was used for chalk working and later clay. It came into disuse in the late 1960s and has since been earmarked for a nature reserve. As such a major part of the quarry has been used as landfill, which was completed at the end of 2005 - which means that much of the distinctive "quarry" features have now been buried!
The area can be accessed by the North Downs Way, a path that runs across the hills of Surrey.
How to get here:
»
Rail: Betchworth - Exit the station and turn left, walking up Station Road. Turn left into The Coombe and then follow it around as it bears left and at the end it becomes the North Downs Way. Walk along here a little way to find the quarry. +
»
Road: M25 - Exit junction 8 and head south along the A217 towards Reigate. Turn left onto the A25 towards Dorking, and then continue along the road until you reach a roundabout at Betchworth; take the northern exit towards the station (B2032), and then continue past until you reach The Coombe on the left.
