Betchworth Quarry
Pebblehill Road, Betchworth, Surrey

Betchworth Quarry was used for chalk working and later clay. It came into disuse in the late 1960s and has since been earmarked for a nature reserve. As such a major part of the quarry has been used as landfill, which was completed at the end of 2005 - which means that much of the distinctive "quarry" features have now been buried!

The area can be accessed by the North Downs Way, a path that runs across the hills of Surrey.

How to get here:

»

Rail: Betchworth - Exit the station and turn left, walking up Station Road. Turn left into The Coombe and then follow it around as it bears left and at the end it becomes the North Downs Way. Walk along here a little way to find the quarry. +

»

Road: M25 - Exit junction 8 and head south along the A217 towards Reigate. Turn left onto the A25 towards Dorking, and then continue along the road until you reach a roundabout at Betchworth; take the northern exit towards the station (B2032), continue until you reach Pebble Cooombe, turning left and continuing on to Box Hill (National Trust). The Downs are accessible towards the south. +

"With the quarry now filled in, only the higher cliffs can still be seen in the area. The rest of the quarry is under our feet!"

The quarry has now been land-filled, so very little remains of the 'surface' from either story!

»

Brockham Lime Works (The Deadly Assassin). Head west on the North Downs Way, and then turn left down a footpath. Follow this alongside the field and it will come out by the old limeworks.

Buckland Sand and Silica Co Ltd (The Seeds of Doom). Road: Head out Box Hill, then turn right out of Pebble Coombe onto the B2032 (Pebble Hill Road), passing Betchworth Station. When you reach the roundabout, turn left and head along the A25 towards Reigate. The quarry entrance is on the right-hand side, opposite Lawrence Lane. Parking you can park on the roadside on Lawrence Lane, near a public footpath
